New Moon: A Successful Sequel

December 28, 2009 • written by Rebecca Holland

Enthusiastic fans eagerly awaited the release of the much anticipated Twilight sequel:  New Moon. It is a thrilling story about love and heartbreak. When Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) suffers a minor injury that creates chaos in the home of her vampire boyfriend Edward Cullen, (Robert Pattinson) the Cullens have to leave town in order to protect Bella from further danger. Bella is left empty and heartbroken without Edward in her life. She begins attempting dangerous things to try to bring back memories of him. Through these attempts, she discovers a new friend: Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner). Life turns more complicated when Bella learns that her new best friend has turned into a werewolf and old vampire enemies are out to get her. She must rely on Jacob and his pack to protect her. But soon she realizes that Edward Cullen’s life is at risk and only she can save him. She will go on a perilous adventure and do what it takes to save Edward’s life even at the risk of her own.

When New Moon hit theaters on November 20th 2009, it was a huge success. It earned 140.7 million dollars on opening weekend. Overall, the film was very good. When asked for her opinion on the film, Park senior Alicia Meyer said “Yes, I liked it, if I didn’t like it I wouldn’t have seen it twice!”

The roles of Alice Cullen and Jasper Hale played by Ashley Greene and Jackson Rathbone are worth mentioning. The loveable vampire couple did a wonderful job of being humorous and clever. Lautner’s performance as Jacob Black won the hearts of the viewers as well. The crowd watched in amazement as Jacob turned into a werewolf and fought off danger. Their hearts broke for him as Bella told him she had chosen Edward instead of him.

Overall, Stewart’s performance as Bella Swan and Pattinson’s performance as Edward Cullen were decent, but sometimes their voices and actions lacked the emotion which they were supposed to portray, which made the scene less convincing. The occasional scenes with the emotionless acting took away from the sense of romance and danger in the film.

However, there were some intense scenes in the movie. The audience was on the edge of their seats when Jacob rescued Bella from the water after she attempted cliff-diving.

“My favorite scene was in the beginning when Bella was opening her birthday presents!” stated Alicia Meyer referring to Bella’s birthday party when Jasper lost control and nearly killed Bella after she received a small cut while opening her presents.

There were also some funny scenes. Bella’s awkwardly funny movie date with Jacob and Mike Newton had the audience laughing out loud.

Even with the occasional detached emotionless scene, the movie is worth seeing. For the most part, the loveable characters are portrayed by great actors and the film has many interesting scenes. Devoted Twilight fans or people seeing it for the first time will enjoy the action and romance packed movie. Individuals leave the theater with a curiosity at what will happen in the next movie, which hits theaters in June 2010.
