The Soulful Sound of Meiko

In the fall of 2007, Itunes did something great.  They gave a discovery download of the week that changed my “favorite music” category on facebook and myspace.  Meiko was the name and folk was her game.  Her song “How Lucky We Are” was the download and it gave off a great folk-pop sound that’s hard to find nowadays.

On her Myspace, I was happy to find some great tunes including “Reasons to Love You” and “Hawii” in which acoustic guitar starred in the background.  And in “Piano Song”, the piano plays a big part.  Her lyrics were soulful and grasping for love.  Not only was her music catchy and easy to listen to, her voice was amazing.  It gave off a folk sound that matched so well with her great folk-pop music.  Her voice was something unique and the style in which in she sang had so much emotion and soul.

The L.A. based Meiko released an album without the help of a record label on September 1, 2007 exclusively on Itunes and CDBaby.com.   Her self-named debut was an independent success.  It made it onto the Billboard Top Heat Seekers list at #28.  On, August 5, 2008, she re-released her debut album digitally with a new track and on September 9, 2008, she released her album to stores such as Barnes and Noble and Borders.  The track was “Boys with Girlfriends” and it was radio friendly, but still had her individual acoustic guitar sound and her soulful voice.  The lyrics were bittersweet: “When I first met you I knew you were the one till you took me home and I met her.”  The rest of her album showed her acoustic guitar progressions and other instruments like the piano and drums show up as well.  Her voice sings along with the music with her longing for love songs.  Her catchy choruses get stuck in your head like her song “Under My Bed” “Here I am, with my heart on the floor, and my love out the door.  You should be knocking.”

Meiko’s newest track, “Boys with Girlfriends” hit radio stations across the nation and is VH1 material.  Besides her acoustic guitar, there’s also some drums and of course her signature “oh’s”.  The music video screams VH1 which is not a bad thing at all. When people hear this one track, they’ll want to hear more so they’ll check out her myspace page which will certainly lead her to success.  Meiko is on the way to the top of the charts for sure.
