Promzilla!!!

April 16, 2009

What has become of the simple proms of yesterday?   Years ago our Dads pinned droopy carnations on our Mom’s simple satin dresses, and they danced the night away under tissue paper flowers or clumsy cut-out stars.  Just ask them; they might remember slow dancing to the weeping wail of Jimi Hendrix’s guitar or climbing the slow Stairway to Heaven with a special dance partner.  They might remember a cup of cold punch after a hot dance or sneaking a kiss in spite of the watchful eye of parent chaperones.

Those days are gone my friends.  Limousines pull up to overstuffed houses to pick up girls in 500 dollar dresses, and the cameras click, click, click sealing the moment in digital memory.  The pressure is on to eat at the finest restaurants, and dazzle the world with hair, nails, and makeup executed by professionals.  The prom itself is a sparkly, sweaty free for all where groups of  near strangers spend big money to grind and paw to a raw beat.  Should we mention the binge drinking or keep that in the shadows? At any rate, the question we are asking here at the Press is “What do YOU think of prom?” Do you still love prom, or has it been copped by big business and ruined. Leave your comments below for the world to see.

I believe that prom is overrated and most people put way to much time and effort into an event that is truely not that magical. Don’t get me wrong though, I do enjoy getting dressed up and feeling extra pretty so I understand why girls go over the top.

Either way, prom is an experience in life that we all should live through and we only live once, so why not feel like royalty for one night?

Prom is something a person should chose whether or not they want to go. It’s a time for seniors to celebrate not only their achievements, but their graduation. It shouldn’t matter how much money is put into, everyone is accepted. Plus, the sterotype that everyone gets “drunk” is ridiculous. Some people actually have brain sense and realize it’s not worth it.
