NFL Update: Coaching News

January 13, 2009

Yesterday was a depressing day to be a Colts fan, but you could kind of see it coming: Tony Dungy retired yesterday. He led the Colts to seven straight playoff appearances, winning Super Bowl 41 in 2007. Dungy was a Minnesota Gophers quarterback from the years 1973 to 1976. In the NFL he played for Steelers, 49ers, and the Giants. Dungy is the only player to ever intercept a pass in one game and throw an interception in the same game since the AFL/ NFL merger. He coached for the Gophers, Steelers, Chiefs, Vikings, Buccaneers, and the Colts. As a coach he had a record of 139-69. He will definitely be missed by many, not just Colts fans but many fans of the game because he coached and played the game the right way, and he carried himself well on and off the field.

He was just a respectable man.

In other news the Broncos have hired Josh McDaniels to be their head coach, making him the successor to the great Mike Shanahan. McDaniels was the man calling all the shots for the highest scoring offense of all time for the Patriots in 2007. McDaniels was the Patriots offensive coordinator since 2006. Also, did I forget to mention the McDaniels is just 32 years old? I must say, he is taking over a good team…on offense; the defense on the other hand is absolutely terrible. Mike Nolan, former 49ers head coach who was the front runner for the Packers vacant defensive coordinator job is expected to be announced as Denver defensive coordinator.

Also former Jets coach Eric Mangini who was fired at the end of the season has been signed to be the new coach of the Cleveland Browns, who two years ago were 10-6 and last year 4-12. He is taking former pal from the Patriots, Romeo Crennel’s job.  Crennel did a not so stellar job with the Browns. Mangini is taking over a team with a few bright stars. He has QB Brady Quinn, tight end Kellen Winslow and left tackle Joe Thomas. He also needs some help on the defensive side on the ball because the Browns defense is terrible.

In other news, a few teams are still looking for new head coaches, like the Raiders and the Lions. Honestly though…why would you take over either of those teams. The Raiders have a crazy owner, who overpays players who don’t deserve it. The Lions… don’t even get me started; they have along way to go and were the first team ever to go 0-16 last year. Those two teams are total fiascos. The Rams are still looking for a new head coach, and are in the interview process but appear to be close to making a decision.

There is still plenty of news to come. The playoffs are still going on for the next three weeks. Then there is free agency and the draft. So it appears it will be a pretty exciting off season, and it usually is.  We will see what happens in the weeks and months to come.
