Movie Review~ Epic Romance in “Australia”
December 18, 2008 • written by Brittany Johnson
Australia is many things. It is an island, a country, a continent—and now a major motion picture. On November 26th, Baz Luhrmann’s Australia hit the theaters, starring Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman.
In this epic romance, Lady Sarah Ashley, a proper English lady, must travel the rugged frontier of Australia in an effort to restore her deceased husband’s dream, a cattle ranch named Far Away Down. Only a few minutes after stepping off the boat, Ashley (Kidman) meets a man named the Drover (Jackman). Drover is handsome, but Ashley doesn’t care for his cowboy-like attitude. Unfortunately, they are forced to work together when Far Away Down’s ranch hands quit, leaving Ashley to find a way to drive her cattle to the ship. During the drive, the two find that they may not be as ill-matched as they once thought.
Unfortunately, their romance begins just as the Japanese commence their surprise attacks on nearby islands. And not only are they in trouble, but a young boy, Nullah, who the couple had grown very fond of, is trapped on an island not far off the coast of Australia. An island that the Japanese intend to bomb first. An island where the country sent the part aborigine boys to receive ‘proper’ education.
The movie has wonderful visuals on an epic proportion. The colors are stunning, the graphics are brilliant, and the imagery is spectacular. The plot is skillfully written, though a bit confusing in the beginning. It’s suspenseful, romantic, and even weaves action into this grandiose film, which runs a time of 165 minutes.
