NBA update: Bad Decisions stack up for the Timberwolves
December 10, 2008 • written by John Miller Esq.
The time has finally come for the Wolves. They fired a terrible head coach on Monday. On the same day, they forced Kevin McHale out of his GM position and are forcing him to coach the terrible team that he has assembled over the past couple of years. He has done some good things for the team, but the negatives definitely outweigh the positives. He has made bad decision after bad decision.
His first mistake was giving former number one overall pick Joe Smith a “secret deal.” The deal was to give Joe Smith three one year contracts for less than his value would be on the free agent market, and give him a few year contract worth a couple of million dollars. The Commissioner of the NBA David Stern eventually found out about this “secret contract” and voided the one year deal Smith already had. Punishment for the Wolves was deadly. The NBA fined the Wolves 3.5 million dollars and forfeited three of the teams next five draft picks.
The next mistake was firing Flip Saunders. A coach who had took the team to multiple playoffs. He also had a winning record in his career coaching the Wolves’. McHale fired Flip Saunders and decided it would be better if he was coaching the team. Then, after he decided he wouldn’t be the coach anymore, he hired Dwayne Casey to coach the team. He then fired Casey after one year of being head coach, and made Randy Wittman the coach. That was a great idea. Wittman ended up compiling 38 wins and 105 losses. That’s what lead to him being fired.
McHale is also a genius in the draft, but he ends up trading the people he drafts for someone else. He traded Guard Brandon Roy to the Blazers for Randy Foye, look how that one had turned out; Roy is averaging over 20 points a game for the Blazers and Foye is averaging just over ten. He then traded perennial All-Star Kevin Garnett the heart and soul of the Timberwolves to the Celtics for Al Jefferson, for a bunch of bums and a draft pick. Jefferson has turned out to be a solid player though. KG on the other hand lead the Celtics to a NBA Championship last year and won defensive player of the year. May I also add, that he drafted a High School forward name Ndudi Ebi over Josh Howard in the late first round of the 2003 NBA Draft. He has had a few more draft blunders, but I think it would be to depressing to list them all.
Now, after firing Wittman, the Wolves stripped McHale of his head coaching duties and are forcing him to coach this bad team, or, should I say, “rebuild” the team, that he has assembled. I think that is the Timberwolve’s owner, Glen Taylor’s way of saying, “I trusted you. I let you do what ever you wanted with this team; they are bad, and now you must make them winners or lose your job.” That’s what I think ALL, and I mean ALL Wolves’ Fans wanted to hear. Kevin McFail is probably the worst GM of all time in all of sports. This Wolves’ team, thanks to McHale, will not be good for a long time to come.
