Construction News

Construction started around summer 2007 when they re-did the track and field, but the actual school work started last spring of 2008 and should be finished around the summer of 2010. The construction is still in progress and should be completed on time. So far they have finished constructing the mechanical room at the North West corner of the building, and most of the construction of the wrestling room and installation of the rooftop.
All the plans for the school are getting the piping and equipment installation, construction of the wrestling room, second floor ductwork, complete front entry, construct new entry spaces, boiler room tear out and replacement, and the rest of the constructing is for the classrooms and other rooms that need remodeling. “We are about three quarters of the way done with finishing up the construction of the whole school,” said Brian Barret, a worker. “There are about 25 guys working on the site currently.” The construction workers are doing sections of the school at a time, and their main focus for the spring of 2010 is to get the main entry done.
The main entry is probably the biggest concern for students and teachers because it is all blocked off and walking around it sometimes frustrates students. “When I go out to lunch it takes too long to get back in school,” said Drew Hirsch, a senior. “And it’s so cold outside.” Many students have this problem and the weather is not helping at all with it being so cold lately. Hirsch has gotten used to walking around the front entrance just like other students have, but he isn’t excited about the outcome of the school. “I won’t be here next year” said Hirsch. Many seniors are probably not too excited about the outcome either since they won’t even be at the school once the construction is finished.
Also due to the construction some students who go out to lunch don’t have a lot of time to eat their food and get back to the school in time. Since the middle hallway in between the gym area and main entrance is blocked off it is hard for students to get to their classes on time. Going around and through the cafeteria is a big inconvenience for many students trying to get to the other side of the school.
The reason the construction is taking so long is not because the workers aren’t working that hard, but because they have a lot to do and only so many workers for each section they work on. “Some of the workers work six in the morning to two in the afternoon but other workers work seven in the morning to three in the afternoon,” said Brian Brown, a worker. “We work about eight hours everyday and sometimes we work weekends only if we have to.” So, overall, the workers work very hard everyday and get a lot accomplished in the amount of time they have.
Construction in progress has created some problems but once it all is finished it should help out students, teachers, and staff in the end with the newly finished school. Also having better classroom space, nicer bathrooms, new entry, reconstruction of piping and hallways, and construction of certain rooms in the school will lead to a cleaner and nicer learning environment. Having hard working construction workers, who work at least eight hours a day, will make our school look great in the end.
