Park Pride is the New Black
June 13, 2009 • written by Samantha Hartfiel
Amongst the flip flops, Ugg boots, and Abercrombie and Fitch T-shirts, a new trend can be seen expanding throughout the halls of Park High School. With the Park Super Fan Club leading the way, an explosion of Park pride can be seen in the form of lacrosse uniforms, Wolfpack sweatpants, and the infamous We Run PHS t-shirts made by the class of 2010.However, one of the most noticeable and striking attire that screams Park pride comes in the form of the fluorescent green homecoming tee shirt. This shirt, which could have been purchased during the 2008 homecoming week, has been making frequent appearances in the halls, classrooms, and pictures of Park High School ever since homecoming in September. In fact, it was such a common sight that two juniors, Samantha Hartfiel and Rebecca Holland, decided to attempt and observe how many days in a row that at least one person in the school was wearing this vivid shirt.
Their approximately twenty five day search, which started at the beginning of May, ended on June 5th with the close of the school year. On this day, junior Amy Skluzacek, concluded what turned out to be a very surprising and entertaining experiment by wearing the bright top. Skluzacek laughed at Hartfiel and Holland’s excitement over the shirt, but the girls admitted that by the last week of school they were really hoping that someone would wear the shirt every day.
“It became more and more exciting with each passing day,” divulged Hartfiel, “It began as something to pass the time but by the end; we realized that it said a lot about the pride that courses through Park.”
Holland also found the results to be interesting. “We never expected to see one every single day since we started looking. We thought for sure we would miss one day, but that never happened. I thought that was extremely astounding. ”
The two girls both thought that the shirt, which often times was worn by more than one student each day, said a lot about the pride at Park High School.
“For someone to wake up and pick the Homecoming shirt to wear to school whether it is just because it is the first shirt they see in the morning, or because they actually planned to wear it, says that Park is an important part of their lives and they are not ashamed to show it,” stated Hartfiel.
The whole school even got involved on this secret experiment, the girls spilled. “We only told our close friends,” the girls explained, “And even one day when we both wore the shirt, other people were wearing it too, meaning that even when we attempted to keep the trend going, it did not need our help, it took a life of its own.”
Some teachers even took part unknowingly as well, including Chemistry teacher Mr. Hedberg and French teacher Ms. Paleen, showing that the style actually had spread throughout the school.
Next year, the girls said that they would try to see how many days someone will wear the shirt, but they admitted that it would be more difficult with a new school year.
“It was definitely fun while it lasted,” the girls laughed. “Thanks to all who showed their Park pride and made our secret experiment a success!”
