Film Review: Bride Wars

Americans have always had a fascination with weddings.  As a society, we spend billions of dollars a year on the special event, not including the honeymoon.  And, when it’s not our time, we spend countless hours watching TV shows and documentaries on how to make our day unforgettable.  Hollywood has taken advantage of this obsession by producing films that center around this special event.  Most recent of which is a film called Bride Wars, starring Anne Hathaway and Kate Hudson.

Best friends since childhood, Liv (Hudson) and Emma (Hathaway) are living the good life in New York City.  They both have good jobs, great boyfriends, and of course, each other.  The one thing they haven’t accomplished yet is the perfect wedding, which constitutes the Plaza in June.  This ideal wedding has been a dream of theirs since they were little, and when they both get engaged within days of each other, they begin planning for the big day.  Unfortunately, due to a mix up by their wedding planner, the highly acclaimed Marion St. Clair, their weddings are booked for the same day.  And so begins the epic battle between the two best friends.  The question is, who will accomplish their dream wedding, and who will be sabotaged out of theirs?

In comparison to the slew of other wedding related films out there, I find Bride Wars a refreshing change.  There was obvious chemistry between Hathaway and Hudson which made their characters much more relatable.  There was never a dull moment in the hour and a half film, and I found the plot line original and interesting.

I would give this film four and a half stars out of five.
