A Swinging Sensation

Just over a year and a half ago, a small group of Park High School students discovered a minute treasure in the metro area where they could learn to dance, listen to live bands, and make new friends, all for a reasonable price. After listening to a request from band director Mr. Tank, seniors Nicole Schank, Frannie Sprouls and Grace Hakari, decided to check out the Wabasha Street Caves, an old fashioned establishment where the partner style swing dancing from the 30’s is taught and celebrated every Thursday. Since that night, Schank and Sprouls have been hooked on swing dancing, and have gone to Thursday Swing Night at least once a month. The two girls have even spread the good news to other Park students and the classy building has become quite a teenage hotspot.
“We insisted on telling everyone how great it was,” spills Schank, “If I must say, the three of us started the whole swing dancing fad.”
According to the young women, the Wabasha Street Caves offer an interesting experience every Thursday as swing dancing becomes the center of attention. Swing Night begins at 6:15 p.m. with a brief lesson in which inexperienced dancers can learn how to dance with a group of expert swingers. Some of the moves taught include the Lindy Hop, which is one of the first swing dance moves from the 1930’s which actually does not include a hop at all, but instead is an energetic jitterbug dance including many spins and twirls. Also, some other moves include the Cuddle, The Date, and many combinations of dips and spins, accompanied by the occasional lift.
Then, from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. , live Big Bands such as the Minnesota Jazz Orchestra and the Moonlight Serenaders, arrive and people are allowed to free style dance to the upbeat jazz music. During this time, experienced swingers are still available to dance with and to teach guests individually, helping to build newcomers confidence.
While some may claim to suffer from a fear of dancing, the girls assure that this fear will dissipate after coming to one session.
“Even if you’re not the greatest dancer in the world, hook up with an expert and you’ll be one of the best in no time,” assures Sprouls.
However, while the experts are accessible to dance with, the girls stated that it would be advisable to go with a group of friends or with a significant other in order to avoid being approached by unwelcoming strangers.
“There are peculiar guys that will ask young girls to dance,” Sprouls informs, “So it’s best to have an even boy to girl ratio to be safe.”
Yet, neither of the girls has encountered any unpleasant experiences while at the caves and both assure that the building is very safe and worthwhile to attend. Also, there are many benefits of swing dancing including making new friends and getting a nice workout.
“Whether or not you’re good at dancing, listening to the big bands and watching the experienced swingers seem to take you back to a great decade,” explains Schank, “Most, if not all people who go swing dancing seem to come back for more.”
Sprouls finally adds, “Just remember the password: Gus sent me. Then be prepared for an evening of fun.”
