I am very impressed by the article on reasons why marijuana should be legalized. It is really insane for the war on drugs to continue. Since the U.S. started working with Mexico, 40,000 Mexicans have died, many of them children. As long as marijuana is kept underground and controlled by cartels, the deaths will continue. I’m not aware of any statistics, but compared with alcohol, I don’t believe I have ever heard of someone being high on marijuana and engaging in domestic violence–wife beating, child abuse etc. I would acknowledge that being high and driving is potentially hazardous and shouldn’t be permitted. But other than that, the pot smokers I have known in my lifetime (I’m 63) have been pretty mellow, peace loving, music and food appreciating good citizens. For the most part, those I know who use marijuana have not “progressed” onto more harmful substances. Congratulations to Mr. McCarty for a clear, coherent and persuasive piece of writing.

When will the story on who or what sorts the gigantic pile of trash be coming out? I’ll be interested to know if our efforts in recycling are really even worth it. If we really want to do something we should get students at our school to sign up to go clean up the trash along highway 61 because it looks terrible right now.
