November Artist of the Month: Bre Nelson

November 14, 2008

Every month, the Wolfpack Press features one student for their outstanding excellence in the arts.

For the month of November, we introduce senior Bre Nelson, who defines the words ‘unique individual’ in every way. It’s hard not to notice Bre, whose vibrant attires resemble her colorful persona. She holds a passion in cartoons, the space-age, tattoos, and much more.   Her one-of-a-kind style,  creativity, and passion for art will definitely wreak havoc in the mainstream for years to come.

How did you get interested in art?
Ever since I was young I have always been creating numerous things with pen and paper.
The other kids were always asking me to draw them creatures or certain Pokemon characters.
I’ve been building my skills up ever since then, and every year they progress.

What is your favorite art style?
My favorite art style has to be anything cartoonish and abstract.
New-age techniques and lots of vibrant colors. Anime/Manga every now and then.
Certain types of graffiti and cutesy, yet grotesque characters.

Where do you draw your inspiration from?
I draw inspiration from situations I put myself into, relationships [good and bad], horrible underground music, anything revolting or disgusting, the unexplained and old school videogames.

Are you planning on pursuing art as a career? If so, what areas of art will you be studying?
I’m looking forward to pursuing a career as a tattoo artist and cartoonist.
Also, eventually horror movie cosmetics and something to do with comic books, if those count.

For most people, pursuing a future in art seems risky. What’s your stand on the issue?
I believe that it takes real passion for someone to pursue a career in the art field.
It’s all in the confidence you have in yourself and your own artwork.
Whether you’re willing to believe that you can make it or not, it certainly takes dedication.

Are you working on anything currently?
Working frantically to create a portfolio that will blow minds away. Most importantly, portraits and shading/coloring techniques to show to local tattoo shops. Also doing a few requests from friends on the side.

What are some things that you think people should know about you?
I love meeting new people so say hey sometime.
I’d love to see your drawings or help you out with one.
