Congratulations Triple “A” Award winners!

January 30, 2009

Park seniors Melanie Currey and Matt Fretwell have been selected to represent the school in the Academics, Arts, and Athletics Award program for Region 3AA.

Established in 1988, the Academics, Arts, and Athletics Award (Triple “A” Award) is sponsored by the Minnesota State High School League. The award goes to high school seniors who have a “B” or better grade point average and who participate in League-sponsored athletic and fine arts activities.

Melanie has been involved in many activities at Park. She has been a member of the soccer team since ninth grade, lettering this past fall. She has also been a member of our varsity lacrosse team since its inception in 2007. Ms. Currey has been very involved with choir, participating in Carolers and the National Music Honors Society. She has participated in the MSHSL solo and ensemble contests and received a superior rating her junior year. She is a member of student council and also volunteers her time outside of school with various food and blood drives. Despite all of these commitments, Melanie also finds time to study. Her grade point average is 3.857. She plans on attending the University of River Falls in the fall to study psychology.

Matt Fretwell moved to Cottage Grove from Kentucky and has been involved in hockey, baseball, and choir in his three years at Park.  He is currently the starting varsity goalie (after battling back from two knee surgeries) and was named all-state in choir. Matt volunteers his time to coach youth hockey and also sang in his church youth choir. He has a 3.34 grade point average and hopes to attend either the University of North Dakota or Bemidji State University after playing junior hockey.

Triple “A” Award recipients are selected by a multi-level process involving the League’s member schools and administrative regions. MSHSL officials will announce the four award recipients (a girl and a boy from both a Class “A” and Class “AA” school) at an on-court recognition ceremony held in March. Each award recipient will receive a four-year $1,000 scholarship.

Additional information about the Triple “A” Award may be obtained by contacting the Minnesota State High School League at 763/560-2262 or by visiting the League’s Web site at www.mshsl.org.
