Back to the 80’s

For a decade that has always been known for its perpetual bad hair day and atrocious fashion sense, it seems that the 80’s are making a slow comeback.  There are more ‘I love the 80’s’ T-shirts wandering the halls of schools and more and more girls are subjecting their ears to the torture that comes from wearing earrings the size of your fist.  Another item that seems to be frequenting the shelves of popular stores is the essentially useless accessory of legwarmers, in every neon color imaginable.  The hair, thankfully, is not reverting back to gravity defying heights achieved by copious amounts of hairspray.

The 80’s fashion may be coming back, but some things never left.  The music of the 80’s has been a permanent fixture on the radio and in the stores, possessing some timeless quality that allows it to stay a constant flow of electric guitars and erratic drum solos.  Maybe it’s because some of the bands from the time haven’t left yet, serving as a reminder of ‘the good old days’.  That still doesn’t explain why the younger generation is still listening to the same songs their parents did when they have no nostalgic attachment to the music.  Be it because their parents have subjected them to it as a child, or some freak alignment of the planets, the music looks like it has taken up residency in our lives.

Like music, the classic movies of the 80’s seem to have never left the shelves of the video stores…only the fact that they’re now on high definition blue-ray discs shows any passage of time.  Comedys seem to be the film of choice, with movies like Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Pretty in Pink, and the Breakfast Club, but the horrors, adventures, and dramas each have their own place in our hearts.

The style of the 80s seems to appeal to any age, whether you lived through it or not.  The clothes are slowly coming back while the movies and music have never left.  Either way, the people who wished to forget the loud, crazy, colorful decade may be sorely disappointed.
